Important Festivals and Annual Holidays in Ahmedabad, India

Makar Sankranti ~ Kite Flying Festival
Ahmedabad celebrates many festivals from a broad range of faiths and religions, but the most important for the locals is Makar Sankranti, or Kite Flying Festival, which is held from 13 to 15 January every year. Makar Sankranti sees the city erupt into colour, dance and music, with thousands of technicolour kites, many of which are emblazoned with the faces of Bollywood megastars, filling the skies. And at night, the sky fills with the twinkling lights of glowing paper lanterns that are launched into the night's sky.
Why kites? Most Hindu festivals follow the cycle of the moon, but Makar Sankranti follows the cycle of the sun, marking the beginning of its transition into the zodiac of Capricorn (Makar means Capricorn, Sankranti means transition). This is what makes it the only festival that falls on a fixed date every year, January 14.
